For Immediate Release: June 25, 2013

Charlottesville, Va.Virginia Organizing Chairperson Sandra A. Cook released the following statement on the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down section four of the Voting Rights Act in the case of Shelby County v. Holder:

"Virginia Organizing is disappointed in the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court on the Voting Rights Act. This important law made it clear that our nation would not tolerate systemic oppression of certain people groups. The ball is now in Congress' court and Virginia Organizing calls on them to act to ensure access to the polls is fair and non-discriminatory in all states, especially those areas that have a history of not ensuring that all people have a right and opportunity to vote."
