As a lot of national attention is being given to racist systems in our society, and with heightened attention to the opening of schools this fall, this will be an opportunity to learn more about the “school-to-prison pipeline.” The school-to-prison pipeline is a process of criminalizing youth that is carried out by disciplinary policies and practices within schools that put students into the juvenile and criminal legal systems. We will learn more details about this issue — hear testimonials, review statistics, and find out about other concerns — as well as strategies on how to get local school boards in Virginia to adopt positive policies that dismantle racist discipline systems.
