Petersburg, Va.—Virginia Organizing and Virginia State University’s Harding Street Indoor Farm will hold the second annual Green Walk to kick off a new food desert campaign to promote healthy eating and lifestyles in Petersburg. The Green Walk will take place on Saturday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and begin at 453 Harding Street, Petersburg, Va.
Virginia Organizing Petersburg Chapter leader Camil Davis is also looking forward to working on the issue of food deserts. “Petersburg is my home,” Davis said. “It breaks my heart to see our city in a state of decline and lacking vital resources, like access to healthy food.
“Working to provide an abundance of nutritious resources to the city will not only strengthen us physically, but also culturally and economically,” said Davis. “I am proud to lend a hand in the revitalization of our community as a part of Virginia Organizing.”
After years as a vacant gymnasium, the Urban Ag Center—Harding Street Project, will now serve as a hub for fresh, local produce, an activity site for 4-H students, and provide research opportunities for educators and scientists interested in urban agriculture.
