Danville, Va.—The Danville Chapter of Virginia Organizing is calling on the Danville Public Schools administration to address the suspensions crisis in city schools. In a recent report from the Legal Aid Justice Center, Suspended Progress 2018, Danville ranked third in suspension rates in the Commonwealth. During the 2016-17 school year, 19.76 percent of K–12 students were suspended at least once.
“We have to ask ourselves: Why is Danville Public Schools suspending so many children?” said Carlene Wilson, a leader in the Danville Chapter of Virginia Organizing. “Even compared to school systems with similar challenges—poverty, declining enrollment, etc.—our suspension rate is among the worst.”
Virginia Organizing invites anyone who wants to work to change school policies that lead to high suspension rates to attend the Danville Chapter’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 22 at 5:30-7 p.m. at Camp Grove Baptist Church (400 Bradley Rd., Danville, VA 24541).
