What: Vigil to Call for Fair Housing in Waynesboro

Waynesboro, Va. — Virginia Organizing will hold a vigil this Friday, September 9 at 6 p.m. at Christ Tabernacle Church in Waynesboro. For two years, the Waynesboro Chapter of Virginia Organizing has been calling for City Council to address the lack of affordable housing in the city and also create a rental inspection program so that tenants live in safe and decent homes and the quality of housing stock in Waynesboro doesn’t deteriorate further.

Three out of ten households in Virginia pay too much for housing, and the costs for both rent and home ownership have gone up exponentially in recent years. Waynesboro deeply feels the state’s housing crisis — from the long waitlist for housing assistance to having one of the country’s highest eviction rates. 

The event will include a candlelight march, an open mike so that tenants can share their experiences, and a presentation by the Community Art Project.
