Following Today's Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, Virginia Organizing to Host Local Forum on the Health Care Law
Health and Human Services Regional Director to Explain How the Health Care Law Will Help Charlottesville Residents
Charlottesville, VA – Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law. Virginia Organizing is celebrating the anniversary of the Affordable Care Act by continuing to spread the word about the benefits of the health care law. On Tuesday, April 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.,Virginia Organizing will hold a large, educational forum on the new health care law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, at the in Charlottesville City Council chambers.
“As Virginia Organizing celebrates the anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, we know that there is still a lot of misinformation about what the law will do. That’s why we are holding forums statewide in the coming months to get the message out about the health care law’s many benefits,” said Sandra Cook, Chairperson of Virginia Organizing. “It’s easy to forget how far we’ve come in the last year. We must move forward with a health care system that protects our freedom and gives us control over our health care decisions, holds insurance companies accountable to patients, and lowers costs for families and small businesses. We cannot go back to the way it was when insurance companies stood between you and your doctor,” added Cook.
Joanne Grossi, Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will explain what the new health care law will mean for families, Medicare recipients, individuals with pre-existing conditions, small business owners, young people and more. Over 100 residents are expected to ask questions and learn about how the new health care law will benefit them.
Since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010, many key health care law provisionshave already gone into effect including provisionsthat make sure insurance companies spend at least 80 percent of premiums on health care, end lifetime caps, and allow young people to stay on their parents' insurance until they are 26 years old. Other provisions will not go into effect until 2014.

As Regional Director, Ms. Grossi serves as the key representative in this region in working with federal, state, local and tribal officials on a wide range of health and social services issues.
