Springfield, Va. – As part of a National Day of Action for Americans for Tax Fairness, Virginia Organizing will hold a public demonstration and pass out flyers at the Huntington metro station on January 30 at 4:30 p.m. Demonstrators will demand that U.S. Representatives Gerry Connolly and Frank Wolf and U.S. Senator Mark Warner protect families instead of the wealthiest Americans and big corporations.
Virginia Organizing Chairperson Sandra A. Cook said, “Congress does not seem to understand that our tax code is rigged to protect the wealthy while harming those who have the least in society. It is wrong for Congress to ask those who make the least money to sacrifice more so the wealthiest Americans and big corporations can have a bigger bottom line. We need fairer taxes, not cuts.”
Some members of Congress have suggested policies that continue tax loopholes and breaks for the wealthiest Americans and big corporations while making cuts to programs that benefit middle- and low-income families.
In a last minute New Year's Day deal, Congress extended the deadline for automatic cuts known as sequestration, raising the debt ceiling and passing a continuing resolution to keep the government operating until a budget is finalized. Recently, Congress approved extending the deadline for the debt ceiling debate.
