Because of the hard work of community activists and organizations across the state, legislation proposing an amendment to Virginia's Constitution to automatically restore the civil rights of non-violent former felons has passed the state Senate!
When a constiutional amendment is proposed, it has to pass both the Senate and House of Delegates two years in a row before it can go on the ballot for the people of Virginia to vote. Earlier in the session, the House of Delegates did not pass the House version of this important legislation. However, now that it has passed the Senate, it will go before the Delegates again for their consideration.
This is a victory, but we still have some work to do to make sure this amendment gets on the ballot in 2014! A similar bill was previously voted down in a House of Delegates subcommittee, which makes it more urgent that you call your Delegate and ask that they support this amendment!
