VIRGINIA ORGANIZING RESPONDS TO HISTORIC LEGISLATION PROGRESS

Charlottesville, Va.—Virginia Organizing applauded the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s work in sending a comprehensive immigration reform bill to the full Senate on Tuesday evening that provides a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States today.

“The work of the Senate Judiciary Committee was an extremely important step on our way to comprehensive immigration reform,” said Sandra A. Cook, Virginia Organizing Chairperson. “Virginia Organizing appreciates the hard work that the Senators put in to make this bipartisan, comprehensive bill closer to a reality.”

Doris Downey, a Fredericksburg resident who has been asking local residents to call U.S. Representative Rob Wittman urging him to support the bill, is thankful that comprehensive immigration reform will now move forward.

“The United States has always been a land of opportunity,” said Downey. “I’m so optimistic that this opportunity could be given to the millions of immigrants already living and working in our communities.”

Virginia Organizing and other groups have organized events and actions across Virginia in support of comprehensive immigration reform with a clear path to citizenship. In April and May, hundreds of people across the state have rallied, gathered, marched, and stood in solidarity for fair, comprehensive immigration reform.

The Senate immigration bill (S. 744) is set to be heard by the full U.S. Senate in June.
