What: Virginia Organizing voter registration drive and restoration of rights drive
When: Friday, May 31 at 1 p.m.
Where: Various locations (meeting at 1 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market)
Harrisonburg, Va.—Virginia Organizing is holding a voter registration drive on Friday, May 31 beginning at 1 p.m. The registration drive will focus on getting new voters registered, educating voters on what they need to vote this year, and helping any former felons fill out applications to restore their rights to vote.
Trish Philon, a local Virginia Organizing leader, said, “I think voting is one of our most important rights as citizens. In order to be responsible and tuned in, we need to be able to vote. It doesn’t matter what information you have if you aren’t registered. It’s important to register to vote and then follow through and vote in every election!”
On the heels of Governor Bob McDonnell’s announcement that his administration will begin automatic restoration of rights for former felons, the drive will focus on making sure everyone who has the right to vote is able to exercise that right, and for those who have lost that right to have a chance to restore it.
Voter registration is closed for the June 11 primary, but those who register to vote this week will be eligible to vote in the November election.
