Richmond, Va.—Today in Washington, D.C., more than 100 women were arrested after declaring the need for comprehensive immigration reform on the Capitol steps. In one of many acts of support across the U.S. for the arrested women, Virginia Organizing delivered a sampling of pastries from cultural bakeries owned by immigrants to U.S. Representative and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s Glen Allen office.
“These pastries represent just a small sampling of the many contributions that immigrants provide our community—especially women,” said Sandra A. Cook, Chairperson of Virginia Organizing. “We provided these pastries to remind Representative Cantor of the contributions of our immigrant neighbors, all of whom have different statuses in our country. Virginia Organizing hopes Representative Cantor remembers that much of the fresh food he consumes is harvested by undocumented immigrants who are trying to provide opportunities for their own families, just as he is for his.”
Virginia Organizing met with Representative Cantor’s office last week to discuss immigration reform and ask for a vote on citizenship by October. Cook said Virginia Organizing has not received a response on this request.
