What: Letter Delivery for Immigration Reform
When: Friday, December 6 at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 5 p.m.
Where: U.S. Representative Rob Wittman’s district office (2777 Jefferson Davis Highway, Suite 105, Stafford, VA 22554)
Stafford, Va.—Every two hours throughout the day on Friday, December 6, Fredericksburg Virginia Organizing leaders will partner with the Spanish Information Network of Virginia (SINOVA) to deliver over 100 personalized letters to U.S. Representative Rob Wittman’s Stafford district office. The letters are written by residents in Representative Wittman’s district and express community members’ reasons for supporting immigration reform.
Lauren Waaland-Kreutzer, a Virginia Organizing member and senior at the University of Mary Washington, explained, “The purpose of the action is to personalize the struggle of people affected by our immigration system, because so often they have been invisible.”
Waaland-Kreutzer added, “Themes of the importance of family unity and the desire for a good life connect the stories in the letters. We believe that we can reform immigration to stop family separation and allow people to fulfill their potential.”
Wendy Jimenez, a Virginia Organizing leader from Stafford, will deliver letters to Representative Wittman’s office because she is concerned about what will happen if the U.S. House of Representatives does not pass reform.
“We are disappointed by Congress’s inaction,” said Jimenez. “Every day that we don’t reform our immigration system, 1,200 families are separated by deportation. Every day without reform is a day that we allow employers to continue to exploit immigrant workers. We ask our Congressman, Representative Wittman, to push for immigration reform.”
