What: Rally to support Medicaid expansion
When: Monday, April 28 at 6 p.m.
Where: Waynesboro Public Library (600 S. Wayne Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980)
Waynesboro, Va.—On Monday, April 28 at 6 p.m., Virginia Organizing will hold a rally in support of Medicaid expansion in front of the Waynesboro Public Library.
“This rally is important because our legislators need to see the supporters of Medicaid expansion in their districts,” said Elizabeth La Grua, Virginia Organizing Chapter leader. “There is a lot of political noise in Richmond that seems to be drowning out the voices of the people out here who are working hard but can’t get insurance because they fall in the Medicaid coverage gap. Virginia Organizing wants our legislators to know that they should represent Virginians, not the political machine in Richmond that is blocking Medicaid expansion.”
The Medicaid coverage gap refers to those who do not earn enough to qualify for health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, but do not meet Virginia’s ultra-strict guidelines to qualify for Medicaid under the current law.
“We are losing $5 million a day for every day that we refuse to expand Medicaid,” said La Grua.
If Medicaid were expanded, the program would be fully funded by the federal government through 2016 and cover about 400,000 uninsured Virginians. In addition, Medicaid expansion will create jobs in Virginia and ensure that the federal tax dollars already paid by Virginians come back to the Commonwealth.
