Portsmouth, Va.—Virginia Organizing will join with Portsmouth community members in support of Medicaid expansion on Wednesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. at a town hall meeting hosted by Virginia Senator Louise Lucas at Portsmouth City Hall.
“The health and economic benefits of Medicaid expansion have been documented,” said Virginia Organizing South Hampton Roads Chapter leader Winston Whitehurst. “It is vital that all Virginians know we are being denied benefits available to us under the law because of politics, not reason. Medicaid expansion will provide jobs to improve the Commonwealth’s economic status and save lives by providing health insurance to thousands of working parents, low-wage workers, veterans, and Virginians with mental health needs.”
Studies have shown that Medicaid expansion will insure about 400,000 Virginians, create about 30,000 jobs and have a positive economic effect on Virginia’s economy.
“The need for expansion in Virginia is dire for our economy and for families,” said Whitehurst.
