Newport News, Va. — Virginia Organizing will participate in a nationwide action, “A Day without Childcare,” on Monday, May 9 at 11:30 a.m. with a rally at the Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News. Menchville House Ministries will also bring members to the event.
“I raised five children and now I’m a grandmother of three,” said Tyran Green, a member of the Portsmouth Chapter of Virginia Organizing.
“During the pandemic, I became the primary caregiver of three children from my extended family. I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it is for people in my community to afford childcare or provide it. Providers don’t get paid a living wage. The rest of us can’t afford the childcare we need to keep our jobs. Everyone is struggling,” Green said.
The groups will call on Congress, Governor Youngkin, and the General Assembly to support and value child care providers. They are calling for a caring economy that values early education and care providers and supports living wage salaries for all families.
