Today is Women’s Equality Day! In honor of this day, Virginia Organizing and our allies across the country are calling for policies that work for women and families.
We need an economy that works for all of us, and that starts with pay equity for all, a higher minimum wage, and paid family and medical leave.
In America, women are still earning cents on the dollar for the same work as their male counterparts. Women earn, on average, 77 cents for every dollar men earn. And the pay gap is even larger for women of color. It’s time to make equal pay a reality for women in America.
Passing pay equity is not enough. We also need to raise the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage would from $7.25 to $10.10 would boost earnings and change the lives for nearly 28 million workers – including 15 million women.
We also need to make sure that nobody has to choose between their paycheck and taking care of their family.Nearly everyone needs time away from work to recover from a serious illness or care for a sick loved one or new child. But the U.S. is the only high-income country in the world that doesn’t offer a guaranteed paid leave program.
We are calling on U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to pass pay equity for all, raise the minimum wage, and create a paid family and medical leave program.
