COVID-19 Bill Should Protect the Most Vulnerable, Not Strip People of Health Care
Washington, DC – In response to the Senate GOP’s Phase 3 coronavirus response package to temporarily lift the Affordable Care Act (ACA) employer mandates, Health Care for America Now Executive Director Margarida Jorge released the following statement:
“As we face an unprecedented public health emergency, the importance of the coverage and protections provided by the ACA cannot be overstated. Stripping workers of their right to health coverage through their employers would devastate workers across America at a time when we need to support workers more than ever. For the health of our country, our lawmakers should only be proposing policies that expand coverage and ensure everyone can access affordable care.
“Congressional Republicans have shown time and time again they will stop at nothing to steal away health care from Americans. This proposal is immoral and irresponsible. American workers and families need support now, and they need the peace of mind to know they will be able to receive care if they or their loved ones get sick. Instead of leading us through the pandemic, President Trump and Republicans are failing us at every turn, looking for more opportunities to bail out giant corporations and protect millionaires and billionaires instead of helping everyday Americans.”

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is the national grassroots coalition that ran a $60 million five-and-a-half year campaign from 2008-2013 to pass, protect, and promote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and protect Medicare and Medicaid. HCAN has come back together to fight the Republicans’ all-out effort to take away America’s health care and put people at the mercy of the health insurance companies again.
