Augusta, Va.—On Monday, August 19, at 6:30 p.m., U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte will hold a Town Hall meeting at the Augusta County Government Center Board Room. Local Shenandoah Valley Chapter leaders from Virginia Organizing plan to attend the meeting to ask questions about immigration reform.
“Representative Goodlatte in a perfect position to lead the way on immigration reform,” said Stan Maclin, a Virginia Organizing Harrisonburg Chapter leader. “The immigration bill passed by the U.S. Senate offers some pretty strict enforcement measures before anyone would be allowed to begin the path to citizenship, but it also provides an opportunity for those who have been living, working, and paying taxes in our communities for many years a chance to earn their citizenship.”
Virginia Organizing grassroots leaders across the state have been working on getting people to call their Members of Congress and holding vigils and other community actions to draw attention to the issue of comprehensive immigration reform and its affect on the U.S.
“There are multiple studies showing how beneficial comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship will be on the U.S. economy,” said Maclin. “A path to citizenship will increase revenue, add jobs to the economy, and prevent a decrease in our gross domestic product.”
