The Lynchburg Chapter has been working on two campaigns in the last year. They want the school board to create a process to allow parents of students who are former felons to be able to volunteer in the schools. Currently, school policy does not allow anyone with a felony conviction to volunteer. The board has decided to create a process for vetting each parent in this situation who applies. WSET covered the latest developments here.
The other campaign would add LGBTQ students to the list of protected groups in the school’s non-discrimination policy. Former student and chapter leader Vicente Gonzalez has been speaking to the board at meetings explaining how much harassment he received in school. Parents and current students have also spoken out. For more on that campaign see this piece from WSET.
