What: Restoration of Civil Rights Information Session for Returning Citizens

Harrisonburg, Va.— Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Thomasson will join Virginia Organizing on October 5 at 7 p.m. at the Lucy Simms Center (620 Simms Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22802) to explain the Governor’s newest procedures on restoration of rights and provide information to returning citizens on qualifications for restoration.
“Restoration of civil rights is important to me because I believe that every person’s voice — and vote — is important,” said returning citizen John Butler, Jr. of Harrisonburg. “Voting helps all of us tell our leaders what is important to us. If we aren’t involved in the civic process, how are our elected officials going to know what we care about?”
“Virginia Organizing is excited to host Secretary Thomasson tonight to help Shenandoah Valley returning citizens understand the restoration of rights process,” said Virginia Organizing Chapter member and emcee of the information session Deb Fitzgerald.
“Governor McAuliffe believes that if we are going to build a stronger and more equal Virginia, we must break down barriers to participation in civic life for people who return to society seeking a second chance,” said Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Thomasson. “I am grateful for the work Virginia Organizing does in communities around the Commonwealth and look forward to joining the organization to discuss the most up to date restoration of rights process.”
Virginia Organizing has held information sessions across the state to help returning citizens understand the qualifications for restoration of rights under the Governor’s Executive Order and help those who need to register to vote.
