We hope you saw us in the news last week! Chapters from Wise County to Hampton Roads held actions to demand that Governor Youngkin “Sign the bills!”
Specifically, we want him to sign several bills that will improve tenant rights and access to affordable housing.
The Fredericksburg Advance had one of the best articles about their rally. Martin Davis quoted an unnamed chapter member who said, “’Hispanic/Latino people help this country progress…and having a place to rest’ is critical to helping them continue to be ‘the motor that runs this country.’”
South Hampton Roads’s housing symposium received coverage from Channel 3 and Channel 13.
The New River Valley Chapter’s rally got coverage from Channel 7 and the Roanoke Times.
The Richmond Chapter’s press conference was covered by both Channel 8 and Channel 6.
The press conference in Waynesboro was covered by Channel 3, NPR, and the Augusta Free Press.
We also held actions in Charlottesville, Danville, Hampton, South Boston, Wise County, and Wythe County!
The next step is to take action. Call Governor Youngkin’s office at 804-786-2211 and urge him to sign our remaining priority housing bills:
- HB 73: Expunge dismissed eviction actions from tenants’ records.
- HB 442: Allow payment plans for one month’s late rent.
- HB 598: Allow late rent payments up to 14 days.
- HB 817: Prohibit retaliatory actions by a landlord against a tenant.
- SB 422 and HB 993: Prohibit fees for maintenance/repair or fees to submit rent payments.
- HB 1251: Limit escrow requirement for tenants’ assertion cases.
