Richmond, Va.—On May 16, U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Eric Cantor signaled his intent to block legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for certain undocumented immigrants through service in the U.S. military. Virginia Organizing Chairperson Sandra A. Cook issued this statement in response:

“Majority Leader Cantor has truly crossed the line with the decision to block legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship through service in the military. A soldier who puts his or her life at risk to protect the United States should be allowed to earn citizenship in the nation he or she is sworn to protect. It is disturbing that Representative Cantor would value his own political ambitions over the needs of young Virginians who only want an opportunity to earn their citizenship.”
