Richmond, Va.—After Glenn Youngkin was declared the likely winner of the 2021 election in Virginia, Virginia Organizing released the following statement:
“Virginia Organizing has been working to dismantle systemic racism and other injustices for 26 years,” began Ladelle McWhorter, Chairperson of Virginia Organizing. “After this week’s election, members will continue to work with elected officials to protect the rights of historically marginalized communities and change oppressive state and local policy.
“We caution Governor-elect Youngkin against focusing his administration on making the wealthiest Virginians even wealthier through unneeded tax cuts. We oppose any efforts to roll back voting rights or women’s rights. Instead, we hope that he will fully fund the public services Virginians need, side with communities across the commonwealth in the fight for environmental justice, and build on the modest progress of the last few years toward ending mass incarceration.
“As a non-partisan, grassroots group, we meet with legislators and other elected officials of every party all year long in order to develop relationships and help them see the impact their decisions have on real people. And we hold them accountable. This year will be no different.”
