Hampton, Va. – The Newport News/Hampton Chapter of Virginia Organizing is calling on the mayor and the city council of Hampton to set aside the necessary funding to build a shelter for the homeless, and they are taking their demands to the neighborhood where the mayor and some members of council live.
On Saturday, March 30, a dozen Virginia Organizing members will knock on doors of voters in key legislative districts to ask them to sign cards in support of a homeless shelter. They will focus on those who live near the homes of city council members and the mayor. This is part of a larger campaign to move Council to do the right thing.
For months, Hampton residents have shown up to Council meetings to demand that they pay attention to this important issue before all possible funding is allocated to other purposes. Council will vote on the budget for 2025 on May 8.
“I was told there was no shelter,” Virginia Organizing member Aminya said. “My daughter’s school got involved and got us in immediately! I was able to find a place to stay on Friday. It’s not right what they’re doing to us. It is good that Virginia Organizing is working to get a shelter on the peninsula.”
Media are invited to follow canvassers while they knock on doors and talk to the community about this important issue.
