Portsmouth, Va.— The Portsmouth Chapter of Virginia Organizing will hold a “Last Look” candidate forum at New Mt. Olivet Church on October 29 at 6 p.m. The event will feature candidates running for mayor and city council in the upcoming November election. Attendees will learn about candidate perspectives on city issues, and will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet the candidates.
Chapter leaders aim to emphasize the importance of local voting and believe that the candidate forum is an opportunity for the people of Portsmouth to meet their next prospective elected officials. “We have a lot of violence in my community. I want to know how the next mayor and city council members want to address this problem.” said Kenny Hall.
Portsmouth residents and chapter members have also shared why they will be attending the event ahead of the election. Keon Shepard of the Portsmouth Chapter said that he is “looking for a good mayor and city council member to help Portsmouth people thrive.”
Crystal Harrison also called on Portsmouth residents to “embrace their civic duty and vote. Research the candidates, understand what they stand for, and choose those who will fight for a better quality of life for all. Your vote is your voice, and it is essential to use it to advocate for the change you wish to see in Portsmouth.”
