At the Lynchburg School Board on February 5, Virginia Organizing and other groups presented comments about the high rate of school suspensions and the policies that restrict formerly incarcerated people from volunteering in the schools.
Danny Jones, one of the four speakers, said, “As an African-American father, it’s very important to me that I give my son the best opportunity to succeed.” Jones asked the school board to change the policy so that people who have been incarcerated can volunteer in the schools, including going on school field trips with their own children.
