Virginia's richest 1 percent pay 5.2% of their income in state and local taxes.
Virginia's poorest 20 percent pay 8.8 % of their income in state and local taxes.
Most of Virginia's middle class pay between 8% and 8.4 % of their income
in state and local taxes.
What's the difference between 5.2 and 8.8?
A fair tax system for all Virginians.
Virginians pay taxes to keep the state moving forward. Yet, the poorest Virginians pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than the wealthiest Virginians.
Not only is this not fair, it is not smart. Virginia cannot afford to have a tax system that benefits the wealthiest Virginians while we all suffer from severe budget cuts. Before another dime is cut from education, public safety and transportation, we are asking our state government to reform our state tax structure to be fairer and smarter for all Virginians.Virginia Organizing Project members statewide are speaking out against the inequality in Virginia's tax strcutre and calling for long overdue tax reform.
