Budget cuts put educational standards at risk

When we moved to Virginia two years ago, I was proud to be moving to a state that had a good reputation for high standards in public education and excellent state universities. With the cuts in the budget that have been proposed, those high standards are at risk. Also at risk are the quality of our environment, our public safety and infrastructure, not to mention programs that people living below the poverty level depend on for their very survival.

There is a way to preserve these vital programs, strengthening the framework that supports and enriches our communities. It involves taking a more balanced approach to our budgeting process and modernizing our tax structure. The Virginia Organizing Project is one of approximately 25 nonpartisan organizations in the state coordinating efforts to create this balanced, effective approach. I would encourage all citizens who are concerned about our current outdated system to attend the workshops and events that will be held in coming months. For more information, visit www.virginia-organizing.org. Join us in persuading legislators to provide the necessary leadership to keep Virginia moving forward.
