Fredericksburg Residents to Call on Sen. Reeves to Oppose Voter Suppression Bills

Virginia Organizing Calls on Senator Reeves to Support Voting Rights and Oppose Voter ID Laws

FREDERICKSBURG– On Thursday, February 2 from 4:00pm-5:00pm, Fredericksburg residents will speak out against a slew of bills moving through the General Assembly that threaten voting rights and waste tax dollars.

Several of the new voter ID laws being considered by the General Assembly would require those without photo ID to cast a provisional ballot in future elections.  Not only would the production of these additional provisional ballots potentially cost the state millions of dollars, but under certain circumstances, they might never be counted.

What:Press Conference “Protect Our Vote Senator Reeves “

Who:

Virginia Organizing

Sierra Club

Mary Washington Students for Democracy

*Following the press conference, participants will take to the street to pass out information and encourage residents to call Senator Reeves in Richmond.

When:Thursday, February 2, 4:00pm-5:00pm

Where:Fredericksburg Library, 1201 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401 (Outside the library on the Caroline Street side)

Why: It is estimated that 500,000 Virginians lack the voter ID required by these laws and could be kept from voting if passed. These bills will disproportionately affect some of our most vulnerable citizens: seniors, minorities, young adults, and low-income Virginians. Senator Reeves sits on the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee and has considerable influence on voting-related legislation.

“Senator Reeves just had one of the slimmest margins of victory in recent history and should appreciate the need to protect each Virginian’s vote. We’re calling on Senator Reeves to work on real issues like education, transportation and public safety and stop wasting time and money making it harder to vote,” said Sandra Cook, Chairperson of Virginia Organizing.
