Harrisonburg, Va.—Several Virginia Organizing Harrisonburg Chapter leaders plan to speak at the Harrisonburg City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 28 to urge elected officials to adopt a plan that promotes diversity in hiring practices within the city.
“The City of Harrisonburg should be the flagship in representing the diverse make-up of our city,” said Virginia Organizing Harrisonburg Chapter leader Stan Maclin. “We need to set an example for other businesses and institutions to follow.”
“A recent photo in the local newspaper shows a glaring lack of diversity in the Harrisonburg police department,” said Chapter leader Ramona Sanders. “Virginia Organizing believes that we should enhance and celebrate diversity in our community and in our state. We need the City Council to actively promote recruiting people of color, women, individuals who identify as LGBTQ, and people with disabilities to create a more diverse city staff in Harrisonburg.”
