About the Richmond Area Chapter

The Richmond Area Chapter started organizing in 2020. We’ve accomplished a whole lot in that time.

  • After a two year long campaign for a Students’, Parents’, and Caregivers’ Bill of Rights, the Richmond Public Schools adopted the document in June of 2022. You can find it on the website here and translated into several languages!
  • Since then, the Chapter has been working on two housing campaigns. One campaign is hyperlocal to a particular complex, Forestbrooke Apartments, in Southside Richmond. The tenants and chapter members are working together on strategy to get needed repairs to the units. We are also trying to get a city rental inspection program, a proactive approach to code enforcement, in the City of Richmond. We are currently pushing for a proposed ordinance and to have public hearings for the ordinance.
  • Outside of our local campaigns, we have several chapter members working on statewide committees, writing op-eds for national partners, holding political education workshops for the community, and having fun along the way!

All are welcome! To get involved contact organizer Rachel Hefner at rachelhefner@virginia-organizing.org.
