For Immediate Release: February 8, 2017

What: Public demonstration to support the Affordable Care Act

When: Thursday, February 9 at 12 p.m.

Where: Downtown Christiansburg (1 East Main Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073, at the corner of South Franklin Street and East Main Street)

Christiansburg, Va.— Virginia Organizing members in Christiansburg will hold a public demonstration in support of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and health care for all people on Thursday, February 9 at noon in downtown Christiansburg at the corner of South Franklin Street and East Main Street. This is one of two actions in U.S. Representative Morgan Griffith’s district on Thursday.

In addition to a demonstration, community members will share stories about how the ACA has improved their lives and benefited their families. Participants will also sign on to a group statement that calls on Representative Griffith to protect the ACA and expand health coverage to all of his constituents. This statement will be hand delivered by the group to Representative Griffith’s staff at 17 West Main Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073.

“As an American, a Virginian, and a Salemite, I am a huge beneficiary of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” said Nathan Auldridge, Salem resident and Virginia Organizing supporter. “This is largely due to the law’s protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions.”

Maggie Price, a Blacksburg resident, is also concerned about access to affordable health care in the United States.

“I’m participating in this demonstration because it’s important to me to help my fellow community members have better lives,” said Price. “Without affordable health care, people are forced to go without medical treatment for conditions ranging from broken bones to depression to breast cancer. That’s completely unacceptable in this day and age, and I want to help ensure that everyone can receive the care they need.”

Virginia Organizing is calling on Congress to improve on existing plans, close the gap, and expand coverage for more people by holding events across the state in January and February as Congress is in session. To find a full schedule of events, visit www.virginia-organizing.org/events.
