Abingdon, Va.–Local residents affected by the dangers to water, air, land, and health by the proposed gas drilling in Washington County, Va. will hold a rally Tuesday, September 9, 5:30-6:30 p.m. before the county Board of Supervisors’ meeting and public hearing on the issue. The rally will be held at the county’s Government Center Building, off exit 14 in Abingdon.
Virginia Organizing and community leaders will provide details on why citizens are concerned about gas drilling and fracking in Washington County. This event is in response to the recent Board proposal to allow gas drilling in the county without a legal protective ordinance to guard against the shortcomings of present state regulations. The Planning Commission recently voted to not allow drilling and the community is urging the Washington County Board of Supervisors to uphold this vote.
Community members are also taking some actions to safeguard the community, to be announced at the 5:30 p.m. rally.
