Event Part of Statewide Rallies Calling for Carbon Reduction
DANVILLE, Va. – Virginians and organizations are joining together in support of the Clean Power Plan during a momentous Day of Action (Saturday, April 2, 2016) in twelve cities across the Commonwealth. Danville will play host to one of these rallies with sponsorship from Virginia Organizing, a non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to empowering people in local communities, and Dan River Basin Association. The plan, which calls upon the state government to uphold standards set for Virginia by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, specifically targets a significant reduction in carbon pollution from power plants. By reducing one of the largest contributors to climate change, Virginia will be one step closer to its Clean Power Plan goals.
“We are very proud to support the efforts of Danville-area individuals and organizations as they rally for a commitment from Governor McAuliffe,” said Ladelle McWhorter, Virginia Organizing Chairperson. “We expect this strong display of dedication from local Virginians will spark a more proactive approach to clean power from our elected officials in Richmond. I can’t stress enough the importance of recognizing that the choices made by Virginians today directly impact our economic and environmental future.”
“We all county on energy as a vital part of our day to day lives,” said Amy Farinelli, Program Coordinator for the Dan River Basin Association, “but non-renewable sources are well known sources of pollution in the rivers and streams that we hold near and dear. We urge Governor McAuliffe and state legislators to take steps to protect our region and our planet by cutting carbon pollution.”
The Dan River Basin Association and Virginia Organizing want YOU to join us for a community media conference on April 2 at 1 p.m. at the Riverwalk Trailhead at the Crossing at the Dan (629 Craghead St., Danville, VA 24541). The media conference will be followed by an informal “Awareness Walk” along the river to discuss the issue and share information with others.
