Hi, I'm Betti. I came over to the U.S. from Hungary and am working with Virignia Organizing to get more experience in community organizing.
Back in my home country, I have been involved for years in human rights both as a professional civil society worker and as an activist. Promoting grassroots organizing and cross class alliance mean a great deal to me. In Hungary I work for a British NGO called Minority Rights Group where we have done a lot of work with grassroots minority organizations. Also, I am an activist with The City Is For All, a movement of homeless and non-homeless people, campaigning for more affordable and public housing.
As a cultural anthropologist, I enjoy working with people in different social and cultural contexts, and I like when we create a common basis of knowledge and act together. I believe this world will become more equal if more and more organized groups of different identities and social backgrounds ally for a good cause and ensure that even the poorest and the most vulnerable can effectively take part in policy-making. That's what I would like to continue working on after this year, empowered with the American experience.
I would like to use this year to get involved in the work of a few chapters alongside a community organizer and learn more about different approaches and methods to community organizing. If you are a community organizer and want to share with me what you know, please contact me and I would be more than happy to join you.
