Norfolk School Suspensions are Too High

The Norfolk Chapter held a press conference on October 23, 2019 to protest the high suspension rate in the Norfolk public schools. The conference was covered by Wavy News at 4, 5, 6, and 11 p.m. on the 23rd, and 6 and 7 a.m. on the 24th, and also by WVEC at 5:30 p.m., and WTKR at 6 p.m. on the 23rd.

“Last year, 16% of high school students in Norfolk Public Schools received at least one out of school suspension. That’s up 2 percent from the previous year. 

“’So every time a child is being disciplined, our first thought is ‘let’s throw them out,’ what are we really teaching them,’ said Christi Alston, a mother of two.”
