Today, Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that he restored the rights of nearly 13,000 individuals after the Supreme Court of Virginia ordered the Department of Elections to cancel voter registrations for returning citizens whose rights were restored by Governor McAuliffe’s previous executive orders.
Virginia Organizing is excited for those individuals and supports the Governor’s efforts to restore as many rights as possible for returning citizens.
But this announcement changes nothing for our work. We will still be going to barber shops, beauty salons, churches, community centers, neighborhoods, and more to find people who need their rights restored and need to register to vote. The process might change, but we will continue to organize and engage people for a more just Virginia.
We cannot reach people for real change without your financial support.
Will you please donate $5, $10, $20, or more to help us continue to find people in communities who are directly affected, help people register to vote, and move people to action to organize for important changes in their communities?
If you know someone who needs their rights restored, the Secretary of the Commonwealth will process restorations for those who request restoration before anyone else. Please visit https://commonwealth.virginia.
If you are in your community registering voters and helping people get their rights back, would you let us know? Just reply to this email and tell us! If you want to get active, please let us know that, too!
Sincerely,
Duane Edwards
