Richmond, Va.—This week, the House Judiciary Committee, led by U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte, passed an immigration bill called the “SAFE Act,” that would make the presence of immigrants in the U.S. without proper documentation a federal crime and give states and counties around the country the power to turn their police into immigration agents.

 

Virginia Organizing issued a statement calling on U.S. Representative Eric Cantor to take a stand against the harmful legislation and support a comprehensive immigration reform bill with a clear path to citizenship. Virginia Organizing Chairperson Sandra A. Cook stated:

 

“Representative Eric Cantor has the power to do the right thing on immigration reform. He has the power to support a comprehensive approach with a path to citizenship, which is what the majority of Virginians across party lines support.

 

Representative Cantor, Virginia Organizing urges you to take a stand against the SAFE Act. The bill is harmful to immigrant communities and families and does nothing to solve any problems in our broken immigration system. We need commonsense, bipartisan, comprehensive reform solutions for our broken immigration system, not a piecemeal approach that does more harm than good.”
