Charlottesville, Va.—Virginia Organizing and the Charlottesville Alliance for Black Male Achievement will host Secretary of the Commonwealth Levar Stoney on Monday, August 3 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Charlottesville City Council Chambers.
“Virginia Organizing believes this forum is important for Charlottesville, especially those directly affected by former incarceration,” said Nancy Carpenter. “It’s important for the Secretary of the Commonwealth to hear from people who experience labels of being ‘other’ on a daily basis to understand their struggles and the need to have their rights restored. We’re really excited to see what’s next for returning citizens.”
Secretary Stoney will give a progress report and hold a public discussion on the restoration of voting rights for former felons, celebrate the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, and talk about recent measures to eliminate the question from employment applications about prior convictions (known as “ban the box”).
