Richmond, VA: Virginia Organizing, Virginia New Majority, Virginia Interfaith Center, SEIU Virginia 512, and the AFL-CIO are organizing a press conference to call on U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb to end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent to prevent the automatic $1.2 trillion cuts to vital services.

Sandra A. Cook, Chairperson of Virginia Organizing, said, “The real questions we have to ask our elected officials are, ‘Who is going to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent? Will it be the wealthiest who have benefitted the most and whose tax breaks have driven our country further into debt or will it be the rest of us?’”

The organizations also oppose any cuts to programs that service low-income people, seniors, and children, particularly Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. “Regular folks should not have services that meet basic needs cut just so the wealthiest Americans can have an average $160,000 tax cut,” Cook said.
