A benefit for the non-profit group Virginia Organizing will feature an incredible evening of music and dance on February 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Paramount Theater on Charlottesville's downtown mall.
The evening features a concert performance by traditional Irish music powerhouse Dervish that includes myriad tones and moods played with fluidity and intuitiveness. Cathy Jordan's masterful stage presence and stories about the songs draw the audience into the music in a way few performers achieve. Dervish's colorful career has taken them to all corners of the globe, and they've shared center stage with such names as James Brown, The Buena Vista Social Club, Oasis, Sting, REM, Beck and many more.
Brian Cunningham's sean-nos dancing will electrify the stage. Brian is the lead dancer in the show Atlantic Steps, an inspiring epic story of Ireland's oldest dance form (sean-nos means old style).
Dancers from the Blue Ridge Irish Music School will make several appearances throughout Dervish's performance.
The opening act is Virginia's own Schuyler Fisk, whose artistry is multi-faceted. Along with her musical talents, she is an actress who has starred in such films as The Babysitter's Club, Restless and Orange County. Notable TV appearances include One Tree Hill and Law and Order.
All proceeds benefit Virginia Organizing. Virginia Organizing is a non-partisan statewide grassroots organization that brings people together to create a more just Virginia. To do this, Virginia Organizing works to raise the voices of those directly affected by policies on health care, immigration, Social Security, predatory lending, living wage, affordable housing, LGBT rights, the environment and more.
