Virginia Organizing to Host Environmental Justice Week of Action in Martinsville and Henry County

What: Community outreach blitz and community meeting to address high utility bills and clean energy

When: July 29-August 2, 2019

Where: Henry County and Martinsville

Martinsville, Va. — A team of interns will join leaders in the Martinsville/Henry County Chapter of Virginia Organizing to host an Environmental Justice Week of Action from July 29 to August 2 in Martinsville and Henry County. Virginia Organizing will conduct a door-to-door canvass of several communities to learn more about high utility bills and invite residents to get involved in the chapter’s local campaign. The Week of Action culminates in a Community Meeting on Thursday, August 1 at 6 p.m. at New College Institute (Room 107).

Due to the region’s older homes, lack of insulation, and expensive dirty energy, residents of Martinsville and Henry County lose money every time a bill comes due. Virginia Organizing leaders believe that we can make environmental justice a reality by working on issues that affect people’s day-to-day lives.

“Environmental justice is important to me because we are stewards of the earth,” said Gerie Fatundimu, a leader in the Martinsville/Henry County Chapter. “It is not only our home but also the home of all the generations to follow. It’s a community responsibility.”

Virginia Organizing will be canvassing daily Monday through Thursday.
