Virginia Organizing Celebrates 54th Anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare in Christiansburg

Christiansburg, Va. — Advocates and leaders from the New River Valley Chapter of Virginia Organizing celebrated the 54th anniversary of the passage of Medicaid and Medicare yesterday by delivering a cake to Representative Morgan Griffith’s office in downtown Christiansburg. Leaders shared stories about how these health insurance programs have improved people’s lives by providing access to high quality, affordable services and discussed the potential impact of Texas v. United States, a lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA), on coverage and benefits.

“I have watched my friends and relatives age. Many unfortunately put off necessary medical care until they reached the age of Medicare,” said Rebecca Scheckler, an NRV chapter member and Draper resident. “All eagerly awaited the day that their salary deductions would pay off and they could use Medicare. I do not want to see Medicare or Medicaid reduced. I want to see them expanded.”

Virginia Organizing encourages constituents to contact their representatives in Congress and let them know that we want to see these vital programs remain fully funded. You can call the Congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121.
