VIRGINIA ORGANIZING AND AMERICANS FOR TAX FAIRNESS URGE NO CUTS TO MEDICAID, MEDICARE OR SOCIAL SECURITY
Peggy Caverly read a letter from South Hampton Roads resident Carrodena Johnson about how the sequester would directly affect each member of her family. Johnson said, “If your only form of income is cut, your quality of life is reduced. If your quality of life is reduced, you will have a hard time living a full and healthy life. Our seniors, who have given so much to make our country great, deserve better!”
“Congress is making decisions about people who already don’t have enough,” said Johnson. “Congress is full of highly educated people; I know they can come up with a way to fix the sequester that doesn’t involve hurting those that have the least.”
The recent tax deal passed by Congress to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” left severe gaps in the path to tax fairness. Virginia Organizing, which organized this national day of action with Americans for Tax Fairness, wants Senator Warner to stand up for all Americans and end loopholes that benefit only the wealthy and big corporations instead of making cuts to programs that benefit families.
