“Stand With Southside, Not the Sharks!”
Group to Protest Advance America, Calls for General Assembly to Pass Legislation to Stop Predatory Lending
DANVILLE– On Wednesday, February 8 at noon, Virginia Organizing will protest outside of Advance America Payday Loans to call on Senator William Stanley and other legislators to support legislation to end predatory legislation in Virginia.
Several anti-predatory lending bills died on Monday, with Senator Stanley in opposition. One piece of legislation remains to curb predatory lending.
Protestors will thank Senator Stanley for standing up for Virginia consumers by voting in favor of SB163, a bill that provides a remedy for homeowners harmed by fraudulent foreclosures. While this is a great step in the right direction, Senator Stanley failed to be as bold in his support of other bills that would have restricted predatory lenders.

Why:Payday loan sharks charge over 300% APR, purposefully locate their shops in low-income minority communities, and perpetuate a viscous cycle of debt for hard-working Virginians. This Monday, State Senator Bill Stanley cast a “no” vote on three pieces of important legislation that would rein in predatory lenders in our local community.
Virginia Organizing will be encouraging Southside residents to call Senator Stanley’s Richmond office and ask him to stand up for Southside, instead of loan sharks.
