Social Security belongs to the people who have worked hard all their lives and contributed to it. Social Security is a promise that must not be broken. If you pay in, then you earn the right to benefits for yourself, your spouse and your dependent children when you retire, experience a severe disability, or die.
But Virginia’s Rep. Eric Cantor told NPR yesterday that he doesn’t agree. “We're going to have to come to grips with the fact that these programs cannot exist if we want America to be what we want America to be.” Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA)
We are not exactly sure what Rep. Eric Cantor wants America to be. But we are pretty sure it is a place where the interests of corporate citizens are given a higher priority than those of than senior citizens.
We need to strengthen Social Security, not cut it.
That’s why on Monday, Virginia Organizing leader Savannah Williams joined U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Capitol Hill to demand a halt to needless attacks on Social Security and the citizens who receive it. Savannah Williams shared her story in front of hundreds of people at the capital and spoke on the need to protect social security for seniors like herself and for generations to follow.
Now it’s your turn to speak out. Please call Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner and demand that they vote for the Sanders/Reid Social Security Protection Amendment to protect Social Security from drastic cuts.
Please call today: 1-866-251-4044 and tell Senators Warner and Webb:
- I am alarmed that attempts are being made to cut social security benefits in order to reduce the federal deficit. Social Security is a promise we’ve made to one another. Any attempt to try to cut benefits by raising the retirement age or in any other way is breaking a solemn pledge that we have made to those who contribute to our economy.
- I want you to help keep that promise and protect Social Security. Please vote YES on the Sanders-Reid Social Security Protection Amendment!
