The Wise County/Norton Chapter had its first interest meeting in January 2023 and became an official chapter soon afterwards. Since then, the chapter has helped the local community fight off landfills, organize a Juneteenth celebration, and install a drinking fountain in a local park.
Chapter members have helped train local residents on door-to-door canvassing and have participated in several forums and discussions bringing community awareness to proposed nuclear reactors in the area. Members have been very active in the legislative session even from home in far Southwest Virginia. They have been calling and emailing legislators and giving statements on issues like housing, nuclear, energy and health care, specifically Marcus Alert, which is the chapter’s current campaign.
Most recently, the Wise County/Norton Chapter has made an agreement with Wise County Public Schools to host a dismantling racism workshop in the fall.
