At Danville City Council’s January 20 meeting, Mayor Sherman Saunders will present a certificate of recognition to Virginia Organizing in honor of the organization’s 20th anniversary in 2015.
“This is truly an ‘Oh Happy Day’ for Virginia Organizing, a day to celebrate 20 years of a hard-working organization standing side by side with the citizens of Virginia,” said Johnny Mayo, a Danville resident and member of Virginia Organizing’s State Governing Board.
Virginia Organizing, a non-partisan statewide non-profit organization, first began organizing in Southwest Virginia in 1995 and now has active Chapters across the state, including in Danville, Martinsville/Henry County, and Pittsylvania County.
Virginia Organizing’s primary goal is to empower real people to create real, lasting change in their communities, especially around social, economic, environmental, and racial justice issues.
The Danville Chapter of Virginia Organizing has celebrated a “Ban the Box” victory that removed criminal history questions from city job applications, has promoted weatherization standards for low-income rental properties and has organized unemployed residents in the city of Danville, in addition to numerous efforts on statewide and national issues.
Virginia Organizing is a non-partisan statewide grassroots organization that brings people together to create a more just Virginia.
