VIRGINIA ORGANIZING CONDEMNS U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES BUDGET

Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia Organizing, a non-partisan statewide grassroots organization, issued a statement today condemning the U.S. House of Representatives budget commonly referred to as the “Ryan Budget.”

Chairperson Sandra A. Cook issued the following statement:

“The budget put forth by the U.S. House of Representatives leaves us with the same tired solution – make cuts to the programs that benefit American families the most while leaving tax loopholes for the wealthiest individuals and big corporations intact.

This budget is not a reasonable response to anything. It is not a solution to the $85 billion in cuts from sequestration. It is not a solution to our budget problems. It is not a solution that should replace the Continuing Resolution.

Right now, Virginia families are struggling to survive and this budget proposes taking away their lifeline. Let’s be clear: we are talking about taking away more funds from seniors, working families and children so we can continue to line the pockets of big companies like Bank of America and General Electric so they can ship jobs overseas, for which we provide tax incentives!

This budget proposes taking money away from feeding people who are hungry and providing health care to those who need it so we can let the big pharmaceutical companies continue to get away with price gouging the government instead of cutting their costs. It’s outrageous!

If Congress is serious about a solution, if they are serious about protecting all people instead of those who hire big lobbyists, they need to come to the table with a serious, reasonable response to our current crises instead of posturing to get attention.

We cannot keep doing the same things over and over again and expect a different result. Congress has to try something new and effective like raising revenue.”
