On Monday, September, 19th the Charlottesville Virginia Organizing Chapter testified at the Charlottesville City Council and asked the council to set as a high priority the development and implementation of a strategy for moving more people of color into supervisory and managerial roles. The City Council agreed and is now moving forward with a plan.
We asked that City Council:
Number 1: Prepare for the development of this strategy by charging the city’s human resources office to conduct an anonymous survey of city employees in order to identify what barriers impede workers’ movement into supervisory and managerial positions;
And number 2: Assemble a work session to objectively review hiring practices and the results of the survey, in order to determine appropriate strategies for addressing the disproportionate numbers of people of color in supervisory positions.
They agreed! They will be moving forward with the survey and work session soon.
We commend the City Council for their willingness to work on this important issue!
